If you're new to all this: a dental implant is a small titanium post placed where the root of the missing tooth used to be. The bone knits to it over a few months, and then a crown, bridge or denture is fixed on top. One implant can carry one tooth. Two can carry a small bridge. Four can carry a whole arch, which is what All-on-4 means.

Common questions

Dental implant questions, answered plainly.

Am I suitable for implants?
Most healthy adults are. Smoking, some medications and a few medical conditions can change the picture, and so can how much bone is left where the tooth was. The 3D scan at your free consultation answers that properly, and if a graft is needed we'll say so there and then.
Does it hurt?
The placement is done under local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure rather than pain. Most people manage the few days afterwards with ordinary painkillers. If you'd rather not be aware of any of it, IV sedation is available for £500 a session.
How long does it take from start to finish?
Usually three to six months. The implant needs time to knit into the bone before the tooth goes on top. If a graft is needed first, add a few months. All-on-4 is different: the fixed teeth go on the same day.
What does it cost, all in?
A single implant is £3,000 including the crown. All-on-4 is £15,000 per arch including the teeth. An implant-retained lower denture is £7,000 on two implants, upper £11,000 on four. A bone graft, where needed, is £400. Those are the numbers, and 0% finance is available on all of them.
How long will it last?
Looked after like your own teeth, an implant usually lasts decades and often for life. The crown on top can wear like any tooth and may need replacing at some point, which is a much smaller job.
I'm nervous about the surgery. Can you help?
Yes. Say so at the consultation and it's built into the plan. Sav will talk you through each step, nothing happens without your say-so, and sedation is there if you want it. Plenty of our implant patients started as nervous ones. How we look after nervous patients →
Implant, bridge or denture: how do I choose?
Have a look at the table above, then come and talk it through. An implant is the only option that replaces the root, which is why it protects the bone and the neighbouring teeth. A bridge is quicker and cheaper but relies on the teeth either side. A denture is the cheapest and simplest, and for some people it's the right call.
Can dental implants stop bone loss?
Yes, and it's the quiet advantage. A denture or bridge sits on top of the gum, so the bone underneath slowly shrinks. An implant replaces the root, the bone gets used when you chew, and it stays put. That's also what keeps the shape of your face.
Can I eat normally with dental implants?
Once the tooth on top is fitted, yes. Steak, apples, crusty bread, whatever you'd been avoiding. During the healing months we'll ask you to go easy on that side, and we'll tell you exactly what to avoid.
How do I look after an implant?
Like a tooth. Brush twice a day, clean between it and its neighbours, and keep up your check-ups and hygiene visits. There's nothing to take out and nothing special to buy.
Do I need an "implantologist"?
You'll see the word online. It isn't a registered specialist title in the UK, so anyone using it is describing an interest, not a qualification. What matters is the training and track record of the dentist placing yours. Here that's Sav, with an MSc in Dental Implants and over 100 placed at the practice in the last two years.
