What counts as an emergency

In pain, swollen, or something’s broken?
Call us.

If any of these sound like you, phone the practice — we’ll get you the earliest emergency appointment we have and get you comfortable.

Severe or throbbing toothache

Pain that keeps you up at night or won’t settle with painkillers needs looking at — quickly.

Broken or knocked-out tooth

The sooner we see you, the more options we have to save and repair it.

Lost filling or crown

Exposed teeth are painful and vulnerable — a quick fix now prevents a bigger job later.

Broken retainer — fixed or removable

One of our most common repairs. A loose bonded wire digging in, or a cracked removable retainer — fix it fast, before your teeth start to shift.

Facial swelling, gum pain or abscess

Swelling can mean infection that needs treating promptly — infections don’t fix themselves.

Not sure it’s an emergency?

Ring us anyway. If you’re in pain or worried, we’d rather advise you than have you wait.

★★★★★

“This was my first time visit as I needed an emergency appointment due to my own dentist having no dentists on duty. I had an appointment that same day, X-ray taken and antibiotics prescribed. The dentist was very understanding of my problem and put me at ease. All the staff were very friendly.”

Emergency dentist questions

What people ask before they call

Can I be seen today?
Usually, yes — we keep emergency slots aside every day for patients in pain, and calling before 10am gives you the best chance of one. On the rare day we’re completely full, we’ll tell you straight away on the phone and book you the earliest appointment we have — you won’t be left waiting and wondering.
How much does an emergency appointment cost?
An emergency appointment is £50. That covers a priority assessment with a dentist plus treatment to relieve your pain; any X-rays needed are £10 each. If you need further treatment afterwards, we’ll always explain the options and costs clearly before going ahead.
My retainer has broken — can you fix it?
Almost certainly, and it’s one of the most common repairs we do — both types. A fixed (bonded wire) retainer that’s come loose can usually be re-bonded, and if the wire is digging in or making it hard to eat, treat it as urgent and call us. A removable retainer that’s cracked or broken can often be repaired or remade. Either way, don’t leave it — teeth start to shift surprisingly quickly without a retainer. The £50 emergency assessment applies, and prices are straightforward: a replacement removable (Essix) retainer is £150 per arch (£300 for both), a new fixed retainer is £150, and Invisalign’s Vivera® retainers — a set of three for both arches — are £500.
Can you repair a broken crown or denture the same day?
Often, yes. Crowns can frequently be recemented and dentures repaired — how quickly depends on the repair and the day’s diary. Call us on 01788 579 577 (before 10am if you can) and we’ll tell you honestly on the phone what’s possible today. The £50 emergency assessment applies, and any repair is priced clearly before we start.
Do I need to be registered with you?
No. You don’t need to be an existing patient to be seen in an emergency — new and visiting patients are welcome. Just call and tell us what’s wrong and we’ll look after you.
I’m nervous as well as in pain. Can you help?
Yes — every day. Tell us when you call and we’ll take it gently. Our team is calm, kind and used to looking after nervous patients, and nothing happens without your say-so. Sedation is also available for treatment if you need it.
What if it’s out of hours?
If we’re closed, call the practice on 01788 579 577 and the answerphone will tell you how to get urgent advice. For severe facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that won’t stop, contact NHS 111 or go to A&E.

Don’t sit in pain.
Phone us now.

The earlier you call, the sooner we can see you — usually the same day. And if today’s genuinely full, we’ll tell you straight and book you the earliest slot we have.
