The gentle clean without the scraping you dread

Hygiene visits at Rugby Smiles use EMS Air-Flow® and Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) — a warm spray of water and fine powder that lifts away plaque, biofilm and staining far more gently than a traditional scale and polish. £92 for an Air-Flow clean — and with Direct Access, you can book without seeing a dentist first.

Does this sound familiar?

You deserve a clean you don't dread

Most people put off hygiene visits because of one thing: the scrape. Air-Flow (GBT) replaces most of it with a warm, gentle spray — comfortable enough that patients actually look forward to it.

  • Tea, coffee or red-wine stains that won't shift with brushing
  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
  • Sensitive teeth that ache for days after a traditional scale & polish
  • Putting off hygiene visits because you dread the scraping

Healthy mouth, healthier body

Gum health is whole-body health

Looking after your gums is about much more than your smile — your mouth isn't separate from the rest of you. Inflamed, bleeding gums give the bacteria in plaque a route into the bloodstream — and that's why researchers keep finding links between gum disease and conditions far beyond the mouth.

Heart & circulation

Research links gum disease with a higher risk of heart disease and stroke — chronic inflammation in the gums doesn't stay in the gums.

Diabetes

Gum inflammation makes blood sugar harder to control, and studies show that treating gum disease can measurably improve it. Gum care is increasingly seen as part of diabetes care.

Pregnancy

Gum disease is associated with complications in pregnancy — one reason gum health matters more, not less, when you're expecting.

And beyond

Ongoing research connects chronic gum inflammation with respiratory illness and even Alzheimer's — and gum disease remains the leading cause of adult tooth loss.

The encouraging part: caught early, gum disease is one of the most preventable conditions in medicine. Good home care plus a regular professional clean above and below the gumline is exactly what protects you — and if you're not sure where your gums stand, the free 60-second gum check above will tell you.

Why patients switch and never go back

The main benefits of Air-Flow (GBT)

Guided Biofilm Therapy is the modern replacement for the old scale & polish — gentler on your teeth and gums, better at removing staining, and safe around fillings, crowns and aligners.

01

Almost no scraping

A warm spray of water and fine powder — no metal instruments raking your teeth; gentle ultrasonic only where hardened tartar truly needs it.

02

Brilliant on stains

Lifts tea, coffee and red-wine staining for noticeably brighter teeth in one visit. Planning to whiten? An Air-Flow clean first helps the gel work evenly for a better result.

03

Kind to gums

Removes biofilm above and below the gumline — the root cause of bleeding gums.

04

The best clean for implants

Metal scalers can scratch an implant's surface — Air-Flow cleans around implants safely, helping protect against peri-implantitis, the gum condition that causes implants to fail.

05

No dentist needed first

With Direct Access you can book straight in — even if you're not registered with us.

06

Certified GBT practice

We follow the full Guided Biofilm Therapy protocol — a structured, evidence-led clean, not a quick polish.

Guided Biofilm Therapy, step by step

How a hygiene visit works at Rugby Smiles

Every visit follows the GBT protocol — a structured, gentle clean that targets the invisible biofilm that causes staining, bleeding gums and decay.

Watch: the 8 steps of Guided Biofilm Therapy in 2½ minutes — the exact protocol we follow at every hygiene visit.

Book straight in

Book online or by phone — with Direct Access there's no need to see a dentist first, even if you're not registered with us.

Assess & reveal

Your hygienist checks your teeth and gums, then uses a harmless disclosing dye to make the invisible biofilm visible — so nothing gets missed.

Air-Flow clean

A warm jet of water, air and fine Erythritol powder gently lifts biofilm, plaque and staining from every surface — above and below the gumline.

Precision finish

Any hardened tartar is removed with gentle ultrasonic Piezon technology — used only where it's actually needed, so there's minimal discomfort.

Keep it that way

You leave with personalised advice and the right recall interval for you — or join the Dental Plan from £22/month and we'll keep you on track automatically.

From our Google reviews, in patients' own words — notice how many arrived nervous.

★★★★★

"I saw Lucy the dental hygienist. I was a bit nervous about this visit but didn't voice it. She and Georgia were so lovely, putting me right at ease without even knowing I was nervous. They use a new and very comfortable tool for dental hygiene — Airflow. The overall treatment and experience was so excellent, I just had to leave a review."

"Lucy the hygienist was fantastic. As someone who can be nervous, she explained everything thoroughly and put me completely at ease. I felt no discomfort throughout — she was very gentle but very thorough. The equipment used was brilliant, my teeth have never felt so clean! Highly recommend."

"I went for my first hygienist appointment with Lucy today — it was fantastic and almost pain free. I'm usually quite nervous about my teeth and gums, but glad I went. Lucy was very good and explained everything as we went along. My teeth look and feel better. Could not recommend more."

Hygiene questions people ask

How much does a hygiene visit cost?
An Air-Flow clean (Guided Biofilm Therapy) is £92, Direct Access hygiene is £107, and periodontal (gum) treatment is £90 per quadrant. If you'd rather spread the cost, our Dental Plan turns your regular visits into easy monthly payments.
Does Air-Flow hurt?
No — that's the whole point. Instead of scraping, Air-Flow uses a gentle warm spray of water and fine powder, with ultrasonic cleaning where needed. Most people find it far more comfortable than a traditional scale and polish, with much less sensitivity and bleeding.
Do I need to see a dentist first?
No. With Direct Access you can book straight in to see our hygienist — even if you're not registered with us as a patient. It's the easy way to keep your teeth and gums healthy: see the hygienist more, the dentist less. More about Direct Access →
How often should I come?
For most people every six months works well, but some benefit from more frequent visits — and we recommend 3-monthly appointments if you have dental implants. We'll agree the right recall interval with you so your mouth stays in great shape.
Should I have a hygiene visit before teeth whitening?
Yes — we recommend an Air-Flow clean before whitening. Lifting away surface stains and biofilm first lets the whitening gel work evenly on the enamel, so you get a better, more even result from your treatment. More about teeth whitening →
I'm nervous about seeing the hygienist.
You're in good company — read the reviews above and you'll notice most of them mention nerves. Tell us when you book and we'll go at your pace: nothing happens without your say-so, and you can pause at any time. If you'd rather talk it through before booking anything, you can arrange a free, no-obligation chat with Georgia, our treatment co-ordinator. How we look after nervous patients →
Is Air-Flow safe on composite bonding and veneers?
Yes — and that's one of the reasons we use it. The Air-Flow powder is a fine, low-abrasive erythritol, so it lifts biofilm and staining from composite bonding, veneers and white fillings without scratching or dulling them — whereas traditional polishing pastes and metal scalers can be harsher on the edges of bonding. Your hygienist keeps an eye on your bonding as they clean, and if anything ever needs a dentist's attention you'll hear it straight away. More about composite bonding →
Is Air-Flow suitable for everyone?
Almost everyone — but honestly, not quite, and we'd rather say so here than surprise you in the chair. A few situations need a different approach: if you have a serious breathing condition such as severe asthma or COPD, just tell us when you book — we'll tailor the clean or use gentle conventional methods instead. The powder contains a trace of chlorhexidine as a preservative, so mention it if you've ever reacted to chlorhexidine mouthwashes. And if your gums are very sore or infected on the day, we may settle things down first rather than clean over the top. None of this means you can't have a hygiene visit — it just means we fit the clean to you. Share your medical history when you book and your hygienist will do exactly that.
