Does teeth whitening hurt? What sensitivity actually feels like

Written by Dr Jasmeet Heran, cosmetic dentist at Rugby Smiles · Reviewed September 2026

The short answer: it does not hurt during, and for most people it does not hurt after. Some get a day or two of sharp, short cold sensitivity, and it passes. The people who get real pain are usually the ones who whitened somewhere that never looked in their mouth first.

Whitening gel works by releasing oxygen into the enamel to break down stains. While it is doing that, the tooth is a little more open to cold, which is where the zings come from. Here is what to expect from each method, what makes it worse, and what makes it better.

Home kit £550, in-chair £600, free with Invisalign. Teeth whitening in Rugby.

What the sensitivity is like, and how long it lasts

During

Nothing with the home kit. In the chair, Zoom can give a few zings towards the end of the session; we stop if it builds.

The first 24 to 48 hours

Short, sharp reactions to cold air, cold drinks or ice cream, lasting seconds. This is the peak and it fades.

After 48 hours

Gone for most people. Sensitivity that lasts beyond three days, or is constant rather than triggered, is not normal: ring us.

Gums can also sting briefly if gel touches them. Custom-made trays are the reason it rarely does; one-size trays from a kit are the reason it often does.

Home kit or in-chair: which is gentler?

Boutique home whitening

£550

Philips Zoom in the chair

£600

The home kit is the gentler route because the gel is milder and you control the pace: whiten every other night if your teeth are sensitive, and the result is the same B1 shade, just a little slower. Zoom concentrates the same job into one visit, which is why it can zing more on the day. If you are already someone who winces at ice cream, tell us and we will steer you to the trays.

What actually helps

“Whitening should never hurt. Sensitivity is a side effect we can predict and manage; pain is a sign something was missed at the start, usually a cavity, a cracked tooth or a receded gum that should have been dealt with first.”

Who should not whiten, at least not yet

Anyone with untreated decay, a cracked tooth, gum disease or exposed root surfaces will get real pain, not sensitivity, because the gel reaches the nerve. That is why we look before we whiten. Whitening is also not offered under 18 or in pregnancy. If your teeth are sensitive because of something we can fix, we fix it first, and the whitening is comfortable afterwards. Is teeth whitening safe? covers the rest of the list.

The science of the zing

Enamel is porous at a microscopic level, and whitening gel opens those pores slightly as the oxygen it releases breaks down stain molecules. For a day or two the tiny fluid-filled channels in the dentine underneath are more open than usual, and cold reaches the nerve faster. That is the zing: a pressure change at the nerve, not damage to it. As the pores close again over 24 to 48 hours the sensitivity fades, and the enamel is exactly as strong as before.

How professional whitening keeps it mild

The assessment first

Receded gums, cracked teeth, leaking fillings and decay are found and dealt with before any gel goes near them. That single step is why dentist-supervised whitening rarely hurts and salon whitening often does.

Custom trays

Moulded to your teeth so gel sits on the enamel and stops at the gum line. One-size trays let gel pool on the gums, which is where burns and most of the stinging come from.

Controlled strength and timing

Legal gel, a prescribed concentration, and a routine adjusted to your teeth: nightly for most, every other night for sensitive teeth, paused if needed. Zoom sessions are shortened if you feel it building.

Before you start: the two-week routine for sensitive teeth

If you already wince at ice cream, tell us at the consultation and we will plan for it. Use a sensitivity toothpaste twice a day for two weeks before whitening starts and throughout treatment; the potassium in it calms the nerve channels the gel opens. Whiten every other night rather than every night, keep sessions to the prescribed time, and skip very cold food and drink for a day after each session. Some patients also use a desensitising gel in the trays on the nights between whitening, which we can provide. With that routine, sensitive teeth whiten comfortably to the same shade.

Questions people ask

How long does sensitivity last after whitening?

For most people 24 to 48 hours of short, cold-triggered zings, then nothing. Beyond three days, or constant pain, means something else is going on and you should ring us.

Does Zoom hurt more than home whitening?

It can zing more on the day because it does the job in one session. The home kit is the gentler route for sensitive teeth, and reaches the same shade.

Can I whiten if I already have sensitive teeth?

Usually yes, with the home kit, sensitivity toothpaste beforehand and whitening every other night. The consultation checks there is no underlying reason for the sensitivity first.

Why did whitening hurt at a salon or with strips?

One-size trays let gel onto the gums, nobody checked for cavities or receded gums first, and the product may not have been what it claimed. Dentist-supervised whitening avoids all three.

Does whitening damage enamel?

No. Professional whitening at legal strengths lifts stains from inside the enamel without weakening it. The sensitivity is temporary and the enamel is unchanged.

Why does whitening make teeth sensitive?

The gel opens the enamel's microscopic pores while it breaks down stain, so cold reaches the nerve faster for a day or two. It is a pressure change at the nerve, not damage, and it closes again.

Can I use a desensitising gel with whitening?

Yes. A desensitising gel in the trays on the nights between whitening sessions helps sensitive teeth, and we provide it where needed.

Does gum stinging mean something is wrong?

Usually it means gel touched the gum. Wipe it off, use a little less next time, and check the tray edge. Custom trays make it rare; one-size trays make it common.

Sensitive teeth? Say so. We plan around it.

The free consultation checks your teeth and gums are healthy to whiten, tells you honestly whether an Airflow clean would do the job for £92, and gives you the price in writing. No pressure either way.
