Composite bonding in Rugby · the honest guide

How long does composite bonding last? Five to ten years, and it is repairable

Written by Dr Nikkita Heer, Dr Jasmeet Heran, Dr Tim Bond and Dr Jason Pall · Reviewed September 2026

The short answer: five to ten years on front teeth, towards the longer end with a yearly polish and away from hard biting, and the good news is that a chip in bonding is repaired in minutes rather than replaced. What decides your number is habits, not luck.

Composite bonding is tooth-coloured resin sculpted onto the tooth and set hard with a light. It is strong, but it is not enamel, and it is not porcelain. Here is how it ages, what shortens its life, what extends it, and what happens at the end of it.

£250 per tooth, front six £1,500. Not sure? Take the 60-second bonding check.

What the years look like

Years one to three

Looks exactly as it did on the day, provided you kept off dark drinks for the first 48 hours while it fully set. A polish at your hygiene visit keeps the surface bright.

Years three to seven

Surface stain picks up faster than on enamel, especially with coffee, red wine and smoking. A polish lifts most of it. Small chips on an edge are repaired by adding resin, in one short visit.

Years seven to ten and beyond

Bonding either carries on quietly, or the shade has drifted enough from your natural teeth that you choose to refresh it. Refreshing means resurfacing, not starting again; the tooth underneath is untouched.

What shortens it

What extends it

A hygiene visit every six months with a polish, a soft brush and a non-abrasive toothpaste, and the same habits that protect a whitened smile: milk in tea and coffee, dark drinks finished rather than nursed, a rinse with water afterwards. Does composite bonding stain? covers the detail.

“Bonding is not fit-and-forget, and we say so before anyone books. It is a beautiful, conservative fix that wants a polish once a year and a little respect from your teeth. Looked after, ten years is realistic.”

Bonding against the alternatives on lifespan

Porcelain veneers last ten to fifteen years or more and resist stain, at £700 per tooth and with a little enamel removed permanently. Bonding lasts five to ten, at £250 per tooth, with the tooth underneath untouched and the repair cheap. Neither is wrong; they suit different teeth and different budgets, and composite bonding versus veneers lays it out side by side.

Edge bonding, full-coverage bonding, and why it changes the answer

Not all bonding is the same job. Edge bonding adds resin to a chipped or worn biting edge and leaves the rest of the tooth untouched; it is quick, cheap and the easiest to repair, and it is most of what we do at £250 a tooth. Full-coverage bonding, sometimes called composite veneers, covers the whole front face of the tooth to change its colour and shape. It uses more material, takes longer, and because it carries more of the bite it wears and stains a little sooner. Either way the tooth underneath is untouched.

Edge bonding

The chip, the worn corner, the short tooth. Least material, longest life for its size, repaired in minutes. Typical of a single-tooth £250 case.

Full-coverage bonding

The whole front face resurfaced for colour and shape, usually across six or more teeth. More to polish, more to keep, and the one that benefits most from a yearly review.

Bonding to close a gap

Resin added to both sides of a space. Predictable on small gaps; on larger ones we talk about Invisalign first, because moving the teeth beats widening them.

Materials and technique: the part that is on us

Two things on our side of the chair decide how long bonding lasts before your habits get a say. The first is the material: modern nano-hybrid composites polish to a glassier surface than older resins and hold that polish longer, which is why they stain more slowly. The second is technique: layering the resin thinly, shaping the edges so they do not catch the opposite tooth, and checking the bite before you leave. A bonded edge that hits first when you bite will chip within weeks; one that has been adjusted properly will not.

That is also why we ask you back for a short review. A polish and a check of the edges in the first months catches the small things before they become chips.

Repair, refresh or replace: what happens at the end

Bonding rarely fails all at once. It chips at an edge, or the shade drifts from your natural teeth. A chip is repaired by adding fresh resin to the spot, in a short visit. Drifted colour is fixed by resurfacing: the outer layer is polished back and a fresh layer bonded over it, at the per-tooth price. Complete replacement is unusual and only happens when bonding has been resurfaced several times, at which point we talk honestly about whether porcelain is now the better value for that tooth. In all three cases the tooth underneath is exactly as it was on day one.

Questions people ask

How long does composite bonding last on front teeth?

Typically five to ten years, longer with a yearly polish and no hard biting. Front teeth do better than back teeth because they take less force.

Can composite bonding be repaired if it chips?

Yes, and that is one of its best features. New resin is bonded to the chipped area in a short visit, without removing the rest.

Does composite bonding need replacing?

Eventually, or resurfacing. Most people refresh it when the shade drifts from their natural teeth, which polishing no longer fixes. The tooth underneath is unchanged.

Will bonding last if I grind my teeth?

Less long. Tell us at the consultation; a night guard protects it, and for a tooth under heavy load porcelain may be the honest recommendation.

How often should I have bonding polished?

At your six-monthly hygiene visit, or at least once a year. It keeps the surface bright and catches small chips early.

Is edge bonding or full-coverage bonding better?

Edge bonding suits a chip or a worn corner and lasts longest for its size. Full-coverage bonding changes the whole front of a tooth and is the smile-makeover option. The consultation tells you which your teeth need.

Does bonding need replacing after ten years?

Not necessarily. Many people resurface it when the shade drifts, which is a short visit, rather than replace it. Replacement is rare.
