Around 1 in 3 adults feels anxious about the dentist — and putting treatment off is how small problems become big ones. Sedation exists exactly for this.
What is IV sedation?
IV (intravenous) sedation is a small, carefully controlled dose of sedative given through a tiny cannula in your hand or arm. Within moments you feel calm, floaty and completely at ease — awake enough to respond to us, but far away from the worry.
You’re monitored throughout by our experienced sedation team, and most patients remember very little of the appointment afterwards. It’s not a general anaesthetic — you’re never ‘put under’ — which makes it a very safe, well-established option for dental care.
For many long-term avoiders, it’s the bridge back to normal dental care — and it’s why the first step at Rugby Smiles is never the chair.
How it works
Meet us, tell us what worries you, and we’ll check sedation is right for you — medical history, options, clear written prices. Nothing happens until you’re ready.
The sedation works within moments — you’ll feel calm and floaty while we work, monitored the whole time by our experienced sedation team. We can often do in one relaxed visit what would otherwise take several.
You rest with us until you’re ready, then a trusted adult takes you home for a quiet day — no driving, work or big decisions for 24 hours. Most patients remember very little — just that it was finally done.

“I recently had 2 wisdom teeth removed at Smiles with conscious sedation as I was very nervous. If anyone else is in the same position I would highly recommend Smiles (and the sedation!) It went incredibly smoothly, the staff were professional, calm and understanding and I am so relieved I did it this way!”

“I usually dread my dentist appointments, but my experience with Dr Zala completely changed that. He explained everything as he went and made me feel really at ease. Lovely, friendly practice too.”

Not quite — IV sedation is 'conscious sedation'. You stay awake enough to respond to us, but you'll feel deeply relaxed and detached from what's happening, and most patients remember very little afterwards. It is not a general anaesthetic, which is a big part of why it's so safe.
Yes — it's a well-established, carefully controlled technique. The dose is tailored to you, given gradually, and you're monitored continuously throughout by our experienced sedation team. We review your medical history at your consultation to make sure it's suitable for you.
No — the sedative stays in your system for the rest of the day. You'll need a trusted adult to bring you, take you home and stay with you. No driving, work, or important decisions for 24 hours — a proper excuse to rest.
Almost anything — from a straightforward filling or deep clean to extractions, implants and larger treatment plans. It's particularly popular for longer visits, because we can often do in one relaxed appointment what would otherwise take several.
Sedation is £500 per session, on top of your treatment cost. You'll always get a clear written estimate at your consultation before anything is booked — no surprises.
Never. Helping people who've stayed away for years is genuinely one of the most rewarding things we do. However long it's been and whatever state you feel your teeth are in, you'll be met with kindness — not a lecture.
