How long does teeth whitening last? Longer than you think, if you do three things

The short answer: anywhere from six months to three years, and the difference is almost entirely habits, not the whitening. Whitening gets you the shade. Tea, coffee, red wine and smoking decide how long you keep it. Custom trays and a little gel put it back whenever you like.
People imagine whitening as a treatment that wears off. It is more useful to think of it as a shade you reach, and then either protect or let drift. Here is what moves it, what holds it, and why the trays you take home are the part that lasts for years.

What fades a whitened smile
- Black tea and black coffee, especially sipped slowly over an hour rather than drunk in ten minutes.
- Red wine, cola, dark berries, curry and balsamic vinegar, in roughly that order.
- Smoking and vaping, which stain faster than anything on the list above.
- Brushing straight after acidic food or drink, which scrubs enamel while it is briefly softened.
- Skipping hygiene visits, so surface stain builds on top of the shade underneath.
What keeps it
A splash of milk in tea and coffee genuinely helps: the protein binds to the tannins that stain, so fewer of them stick. Drink dark drinks rather than nurse them, use a straw for cold ones, rinse with water afterwards and brush an hour later. Whitening before other work
If you are planning bonding, veneers or a crown on a front tooth, whiten first and wait two weeks for the shade to settle before the new work is matched to it. Bonding and porcelain do not whiten later, so a whitened smile with an older crown in it shows the mismatch. Invisalign patients get whitening included at the end of treatment for the same reason.
The realistic timeline, shade by shade
Months one to six
The shade you reached holds with ordinary care. Tea, coffee and wine leave surface stain that a polish lifts, but the tooth colour underneath is unchanged.
Six months to two years
The shade drifts a little for most people, faster for smokers and heavy coffee drinkers. This is when a night or two of top-up gel in your trays resets it.
Two to three years and beyond
With top-ups and six-monthly cleans, the smile stays where you put it. Without them, it drifts back gradually towards where it started, though rarely all the way.
Why in-chair does not last longer than home whitening
People assume the stronger in-chair gel gives a longer-lasting result. It does not; it gives a faster one. Both methods change the colour of the tooth by the same mechanism, and once the shade is reached the tooth does not know how it got there. What decides longevity is entirely what happens afterwards: habits, cleaning, and whether you top up. Top-ups: how, how often, and the mistake to avoid
A top-up is one or two nights of gel in your own trays when you notice the shade drifting, typically every six to twelve months. Buy the gel from us so the strength and the trays match. The mistake is whitening constantly, every few weeks, chasing a shade beyond the tooth’s natural limit: it increases sensitivity for no extra colour. If the trays no longer fit because your teeth have moved or you have had new dental work, new trays are made rather than forcing the old ones.
When it is not the whitening that faded
Sometimes a smile looks duller a year on and the shade has not changed at all: surface stain has built up, or a filling or crown that was never going to whiten now stands out against the lighter teeth. A clean fixes the first. For the second, bonding or a new crown matched to the whitened shade is the fix, and it is why we whiten before any new front-tooth work, not after.
