How much does a hygienist cost, and how often should you go?

The short answer: £92 for an Airflow hygiene visit, £107 if you book the hygienist directly without seeing a dentist first, and every six months for most people. Gum disease, dental implants, or teeth that build up tartar or stain quickly mean every three months. Dental Plan members have hygiene visits included from £22 a month.

Hygienist prices in the UK run from around £60 to £150 a visit, with Airflow at the upper end and London higher still. What you are paying for is the hygienist’s time and skill, the protocol they use, and whether a dentist is involved. There is no separate charge for scaling within a routine visit. 0% finance is not needed at this price, but the Dental Plan spreads it monthly.

What decides hygienist prices anywhere

The protocol: a paste polish costs less to deliver than Airflow with Guided Biofilm Therapy, which is why Airflow visits are typically £20 to £50 more.
The time: a routine visit is about thirty minutes. A first visit after years away, or a deep clean for gum disease, takes longer and is priced separately.
Who you see: a dental therapist or hygienist trained and audited in GBT, as Lucy and Liliana are, against a general clean.
Whether a dentist is involved: direct access means the hygienist takes on the checks a dentist would otherwise have done, which is why it costs a little more.
Where you are: the same visit in central London can be double a Midlands price.

The NHS position

On the NHS, a scale and polish is only provided when it is clinically necessary, under the standard band charges, and cosmetic stain removal is not covered. Airflow is not an NHS treatment. How often, honestly

Every six months

Most people with healthy gums. Enough to keep biofilm from settling into tartar between visits, and to catch small changes early.

Every three months

Gum disease, dental implants, and anyone who builds up tartar or staining quickly: heavy tea and coffee drinkers, smokers, and people whose saliva simply deposits more. Implants in particular need the gum around them kept spotless.

More often at first

After a deep clean for gum disease, visits are closer together until the gums are stable, then stretch back out. Lucy’s special interest is gum disease, and she sets the schedule with you.

The economics of prevention

A hygiene visit twice a year is £184. A single filling is £140, a crown £700, gum disease treatment £90 a quadrant, and an implant to replace a tooth lost to gum disease starts at £3,000. Most of the expensive dentistry we do is on teeth and gums that were not cleaned professionally for years. The Dental Plan makes the arithmetic simple: from £22 a month it covers check-ups and hygiene visits with 10% off any treatment, and the £38 plan includes four hygiene visits a year for the three-monthly patients. What happens in the thirty minutes

A look at your gums with a gentle probe to measure any pockets, the disclosing gel to show where plaque is, the Airflow clean, targeted scaling where hardened tartar has set, a check that every surface is smooth, and two or three specific pointers on the places your brushing misses.
