What is Airflow® teeth cleaning — and why it's replaced the scrape

If your memory of the hygienist is metal instruments scraping against your teeth, Airflow® is the reason that memory is out of date. Here's what it actually is, what it feels like, and who it helps — in plain English.

The short version

Warm water, air and a fine powder — not a scraper

Airflow® cleans your teeth with a precisely controlled jet of warm water, air and a very fine powder. That jet lifts away plaque, early tartar and surface staining — tea, coffee, red wine, smoking — including from the places instruments struggle to reach: between teeth, along the gumline, around braces and implants.

It's the centrepiece of Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) — a structured, evidence-based protocol for removing the bacterial film that causes decay and gum disease. Rugby Smiles is GBT certified, which means our hygiene team is trained and audited in the full protocol — not just the machine.

Why patients prefer it

Airflow® vs the traditional scrape

Gentler

No metal scraping against enamel — the jet does the work. Patients with sensitive teeth, and plenty who dreaded hygiene visits, routinely call it the most comfortable clean they've had.

More thorough

The jet reaches between teeth, under the gumline and around dental work — where biofilm actually hides and where instruments can't easily follow. Staining lifts evenly rather than patch by patch.

Kinder to dental work

Implants, veneers, bonding and braces all need cleaning — and all dislike metal instruments. Airflow® cleans around them safely, which is why we use it as standard.

Honest caveat: where hardened tartar has built up below the gumline, targeted scaling is still needed — Airflow® doesn't replace proper gum treatment, it makes the whole visit gentler and more complete.

What it feels like

Warm, quick and a little bit minty

The water is warmed, the powder is fine (most patients say it feels like a firm, warm jet wash — strange for ten seconds, then fine), and there's no scraping sound conducted through your skull, which for many people was the worst part of the old way. A full clean typically takes 30–40 minutes, and your teeth feel glass-smooth afterwards.

At Rugby Smiles an Airflow® hygiene visit is £92 (£107 direct access if you're not a registered patient — no exam needed), and Dental Plan members get two visits a year included from £22/month. Everything about our hygiene visits is here →

Quick answers

Airflow® questions, answered

Does Airflow® whiten your teeth?
It removes surface staining — tea, coffee, wine, smoking — so teeth usually look noticeably brighter afterwards, back to their natural shade. It doesn't change the underlying colour of the tooth itself; for that you'd want professional whitening, which works best on freshly cleaned teeth — which is why the two pair so well.
Does it hurt?
For most people it's the most comfortable professional clean they've had — warm water, no scraping. Sensitive patients usually find it far kinder than instruments. If deeper scaling is needed for hardened tartar, that part can be done with anaesthetic if you want it.
Is Airflow® safe for implants, veneers and bonding?
Yes — that's one of its main advantages. The jet cleans around implants, veneers, bonding and orthodontic work without the scratching risk of metal instruments, which is why it's our standard clean for patients with dental work worth protecting.
How often should I have it?
Twice a year suits most people — which is exactly what the Dental Plan includes. If you're being treated for gum disease, your hygienist may recommend a closer interval while things stabilise.
What does GBT certified actually mean?
Guided Biofilm Therapy is a structured eight-step protocol developed with the Swiss makers of Airflow® — disclosing the biofilm so you can see it, removing it systematically, and checking nothing's missed. Certification means the practice's equipment and training are verified for the full protocol, not just owning the machine.

What not to do after Airflow

When Airflow is not the right first step

If it has been years since a clean, or gum disease has let hardened tartar set below the gumline, the first visit is mostly scaling and may need more than one appointment, with Airflow finishing the job. Anyone with a breathing condition should tell us first so suction is positioned carefully. Anyone on a strict low-sodium diet should know our powder is erythritol, not sodium bicarbonate. Otherwise, adults, children, pregnant patients and everyone with implants, veneers, bonding or braces can have it. Does Airflow hurt, and is it safe? goes through each group.

Can Airflow remove every kind of stain?

Surface stain from tea, coffee, wine, smoking and some mouthwashes, yes, and usually in one visit. Stain that has soaked into old composite bonding lifts with Airflow and a polish. Colour that is inside the tooth, from age, an old injury or childhood medicines, does not come off because it is not on the surface; that is what whitening is for, and Airflow first makes the whitening work better.

Is it worth it?

For most people, yes: the same thirty minutes as a traditional clean, more of the mouth actually cleaned, no scraping, safe around any dental work, and £92. Airflow or scale and polish? sets the two side by side, and the cost page covers prices, the Dental Plan and how often to come.
