Whitening is priced everywhere from £99 in a salon to £1,000 in London, and the number on its own tells you almost nothing. What matters is what the gel is, who is supervising it, what is included, and whether your teeth need it at all. Here is the whole picture as we give it in the consultation.

The £92 question we ask first
If your teeth have darkened from tea, coffee, red wine or smoking, a good deal of that is surface staining, and whitening gel is not the cheapest way to shift it. An Airflow hygiene clean at £92 lifts surface stains and often brightens teeth more than people expect, for a sixth of the price. If the colour underneath is still not what you want, whitening changes the shade of the tooth itself, and that is when it earns its price.

What a £99 salon price is really buying
In the UK, whitening gel strong enough to change your tooth shade can only be used or prescribed by a dentist, hygienist or therapist. A salon is limited by law to 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, which is a sixtieth of what we use, so either the result is cosmetic and short-lived, or the gel is illegal and unsupervised on your gums. Online kits and strips sit in the same 0.1% bracket. They can polish a little surface staining. They cannot do what a B1 guarantee does.
Free with Invisalign, and the order to do things in
Every Invisalign package includes professional whitening at the end, so if straightening is on your list, do not buy whitening separately first. The same logic applies to bonding and veneers: whiten first, wait a couple of weeks for the shade to settle, then match the new work to the lighter colour. Bonding and crowns do not whiten afterwards.
Why teeth go yellow in the first place, and why it changes the price
Two different things make teeth look dark, and they need different fixes. Surface stain, from tea, coffee, red wine and smoking, sits on the outside of the enamel and comes off with a professional clean. Colour inside the tooth, from age, thinning enamel, old injury or some childhood medicines, does not; that is what whitening gel changes. A fair number of people who ask about whitening have mostly surface stain, which is why the honest first step is often the £92 Airflow clean rather than £550 of gel. Surface stain
Tea, coffee, wine, smoking, some mouthwashes. Sits on the enamel. Comes off with an Airflow clean and a polish, often more dramatically than people expect.
Colour in the tooth
Age, worn enamel, old trauma, tetracycline in childhood. Only whitening gel changes it, and a single dark tooth from an old injury is whitened from the inside by a dentist.

What costs extra

In-chair or take-home: the side by side
Both reach the same shade. Zoom gets there in a visit and can zing more on the day; Boutique gets there over a fortnight and is gentler. Zoom is the answer when there is a date in the diary within a month; Boutique is the better value and the better choice for sensitive teeth. What result to expect, honestly
Most people lighten by several shades, and Boutique is guaranteed to reach B1, one of the lightest natural shades, provided your teeth are suitable and you follow the routine. Whitening does not make teeth whiter than their natural limit, does not change crowns, veneers or bonding, and works less well on grey than on yellow.
